The battle of the badges softball game between the Reading Police and Reading Firefighters was held on Sunday August 5th at FirstEnergy Stadium. The softball game was played prior to the regular Phillies game against the Binghamton Mets.
The firefighters came onto the field strong and scored a number of runs in the first few innings. By the fourth inning the fire team was ahead by ten runs. The police never got a chance to recover and lost the game by a score of 16 to 8.
Both teams agree that this game is a great way to honor the memories of two of the police's comrades, Michael Wise and Scott Wertz, and that the knowledge that we lost Wertz one year ago will be on the minds of both teams. Many of the firefighters on the team had played softball with Wertz in different leagues. The first Battle of the Badges Softball match-up was played last April and Officer Wertz played in the game. It is a sad irony that one year after his death the second game would be played in his honor.
