About the

The City of Reading, PA has a population of more than 88K, and encompasses an area of 10 square miles. During the day the population can swell to greater than 90,000. There are just over 30,000 occupied dwellings, of which, about half are rental units, there are also more than 4,000 unoccupied buildings.

The City of Reading has a Crime Rate that is almost twice that of the national average, this effects our Fire Department in at least 2 ways.

  • As the EMS/First Responder provider for the Citizens, Fire & EMS respond to all of the injuries resulting from crime.

  • Fire/EMS also deals with a high arson rate and other incidents resulting from crime.

The Department of Fire and Rescue Services
celebrates our legacy, embraces our here and now,
and strategically and creatively, plans for the future.

Our Web Site

www.readingpafire.com began in September 2002 as an outlet for numerous fire photos, to express the aspects of our work on-line. It is the 4th known site to attempt this task. The site and space are paid through merchandising, donations and contributions of pictures and narratives that are sent in by members and friends of the department.

Soon after going on line, we began to receive a large number of fire photos, including many old shots of members, apparatus and fires. These early pictures were the catalyst for what has become a successful venture. We began receiving current shots with stories and also many other pictures from activities around the department. We currently have over 7000 pictures and videos on the site. We also use the site to inform visitors of events, activities and other information on happenings within the department.

With 11 years online, we have built a close relationship with many of our visitors and have received much praise about our site from some very noteworthy individuals. We are dedicated to the membership and to the department as we strive to display the proud work of the men and women of the Reading Department of Fire and Rescue Services (the Reading Fire Department.)

We're RFD Proud!
