The Fire Department was on hand on Penn Street June 23 for City Government Day at the weekly Mid Day Cafe. The Department was just one of the city agencies with an information booth set up at the event to highlight their work and try to impress citizens in applying for employment with the City. Although no jobs within the department are currently available, the City hopes to attract what it deems a more diverse make up of the population of the City's citizenship.
The Fire Department has a rigorous testing procedure which was last offered in 2004 and yielded a list of sixty candidates. No one as of yet has been hired from that list but officials admit they may need to put a class of firefighters on within the next few years. When the list has been exhausted, the testing process will begin again.
On duty firefighters manned the booth. They handed out job description pamphlets and talked to prospective candidates about firefighting and emergency medical services. The Fire Prevention Division brought it's latest tool to teach home fire safety, the Hazard House and Sparky the Fire Dog visited with children attending the event.
