At 1740, E1-B2-B3- and C5 were turned out for a reported "mountain fire" in the Neversink Mountain called in from the Oakbrook section of the city. Communications reported not having any visuals on the mountain and numerous calls were being received for the 1100 block of E. Wyomissing Blvd. E1-B2-and C5 determined Neversink was false while B3 was rerouted to the Oakbrook area and E14-C3 were dispatched to assist. B3 reported a heavy column on the approach and found a deep seated 50x30 brush fire burning behind the Olivets Club at 1161 Pershing Blvd. Flames were lapping over 10 feet and a utility pole with high voltage lines was fully engulfed. B3 quickly went to work with their 2 hose reels and E14 established a water supply. B2 & C5 arrived to assist and an 1 3/4 line was put into service and the fire was contained within 20 minutes. 15 gallons of detergent was cycled through B3 into the lines. Met-Ed was called to the scene but determined charring was the only damage to their property. Forestry crews arrived and handled clean up. RFD crews cleared at 1900.

"D" Platoon companies just relieving the "A" shift from a humid dayshift began a busy nightshift with a box alarm into the 18th Ward on Pershing Blvd. Initial calls for that incident reported smoke throughout a building. Medic 603 just leaving the Reading Hospital quickly arrived and found juveniles had thrown fireworks into a dwelling and smoked the property. Units were returned quickly.
Moments later box 31 was tapped for the 100 block of south 4th street. Rescue 1 was quick to arrive reporting smoke throughout the block. As companies began searching for the source, Lt Rehr located the source at 108 south 4th street. The homeowner fell asleep while cooking food which caused the tremendous smoke condition in the building and the block. A small amount of fire was extinguished , and companies began the task of venting. Crews were on scene for 30 minutes.

Box 75 transmitted around just prior to 1500 hrs for report of a fire in a 2nd floor bedroom at 858 Schuykill Ave. Engine 9 arriving quickly assumed first due, and found a matress and a trash can burning. All burning contents were removed, while a check was conducted for extension.

Shortly after 2000 hours a call was made from the 400 block of south 10th street. The individual reported smelling natural gas in the block. An assignment was sent, bringing Engine 13, Tower 1, Rescue 1 & Medic 603 into the area. Crews made their way into 424 south 10th which was under renovation. Coincidentally, the dwelling was the scene of an early morning fire several years prior when Engine 13 was quartered less than 2 blocks away. After making entry gas detecting devices immediately went into alarm, with numbers converting into direct gas readings. With this finding, 2nd Deputy Chief Sands ordered the evacuation of approx 20 homes directly in the area. UGI was notified, and had difficulty in shutting the gas off at the curb which caused them to close a main valve in the street. Crews found a pipe missing in the basement of the property and were on scene for over an hour.

While most city companies were enjoying a relatively quiet Monday evening, box 84 dropped at 2114 reporting a fire at 150 Spring St. Engine 11, who was on the street from a med call, went on the scene reporting smoke showing from the 3rd floor. Other units arrived and quickly went to work stretching a line, getting a water supply, and putting ladder 3's main to the 3rd floor window.
Car 3 arrived and assumed "Spring St Command" and reported a 3 story semi-detached with heavy smoke from the 3rd floor. As the engine company called for water, the windows were vented and the fire was quickly knocked down. Car 3 placed the fire under control in approximately 20 minutes. The medic unit checked out the occupants but they did not require transport.
A preliminary investigation determined the occupants had a hot tub plugged into an extension cord, causing it overheat.

 The department will be beginning NFPA 1006 Training For Technical Rescue. The course starts in November and finishes in March.
 The Liberty Station Fire Museum Project moves forward with some repairs to the exterior, and a new heating system.
 There will be a monetary collection for Allentown Fire Fighter Rick Ensley. He and his family suffered a total loss of home and possessions due to a fire that occurred on Tuesday, November 11, 2008. photo from Morning Call
