A box alarm was dispatched around 0100 this morning for a possible structure fire in the 1200 blk of No. 13th street. Units wrapping up from a fumes call nearby arrived just after the dispatch and Car 2 reported heavy fire coming from the front of two homes. Crews assembled and attacked the fire located at 1227 No 13th. Fire from inside the first floor front had blown out the front window and involved the enclosed front porch. It extended to the porch of the exposure and was threatening the neighboring interior.
Soon after apparatus arrived, Car 8 called for the med. unit to come to the rear where a victim was discovered. The paramedics responded to the location and began treatment. The victim was then transported to Reading Hospital. Early reports stated the victim suffered burns to the face and hands. It was not directly known if the patient was transferred to a burn unit.
Meanwhile, Car 2 reported the bulk of the fire blackened down and crews making good progress on the interior. The exposure was being checked for extension and firefighters were opening up the ceiling of the porch roof to check for hidden fire. The fire was put under control at 01:39 by command with heavy overhaul. The Fire Marshal was notified to respond and began an investigation into the possible cause. Beside the male victim, three other occupants were reportedly at home when the fire broke out, at least two of them juveniles. No other injuries were reported. Apparatus on the box were Engines 9, 11, 1, 13safety, Snorkel 1, Rescue 1, Medic 603 and 601 and Cars 2 and 8, Car 22 also responded. Thanks to everyone that contributed to this story.
