Fire in former Dana Building Print E-mail

Thursday, 13 October 2005

Around 20:12, a street box was dispatched for a reported fire in the area of the 1100 blk of No. Front Street. Car 3 was in the area and reported a visual working fire in one of the buildings at the former Dana plant just off Weiser Street. Companies were re-routed to the main gate and Car 3 called radio and reported that an attempt was being made to cut the lock on a gate at the entrance to the plant at Robeson and Weiser when a security guard came running up the street with a key. He also ordered the phantom box for the complex to be filled out bringing an additional Ladder to the scene.

Apparatus assembled at the entrance of the Lewis Building and opened a large overhead door to gain access. The fire was visible toward the center of the block long structure and extended to the roof. A 2 1/2 inch line was advanced into the building by several crews as others established a water supply. The interior crews began to fight the fire from one side of a center partition and blackened down much of the visible fire. An additional line was stretched down the opposite side and doused fire from that vantage. Crews then drug the line up a staircase and attacked the rest of the interior structure that was situated on the second story of central office space. Ladder 3 and Engine 1 were positioned on the side of the building and crews were sent to check the condition of the roof. Fire had extended into furring that held the roof decking and was quickly extinguished by an addition line.

The smaller structure and it's contents were destroyed and crews worked for about 30 minutes extinguishing the smoldering remains, apparatus were on the scene for nearly 2 hours. Cutting operations were taking place throughout the day in an effort to begin dismantling the building which is slated for demolition, workers left about an hour before the fire was discovered and it is believed that the fire was started by a dropped ember from the process. In addition to Ladder 3, Car 3 and Engine 1, Engines 11, 3 and 9, Ladder 1, Rescue 1, Medic 603 and Car 6 were assigned to the box. Car 23 responded to investigate.
