Members were changing shifts when the call came in at 07:33, some oncoming A Platoon firefighters reported seeing the smoke plume just prior to arriving for work. Smoke was also evident to many of the responding apparatus, Engine 13, which was on the way back to station from a med call, reported heavy smoke showing from 11th and Cotton Streets.
Engine 5 arrived on location and reported a working fire in a multiple occupancy with heavy fire showing. They soon after relayed a report from the occupants that everyone was out of the building. The crew then advanced a handline into the structure.
Car 6 arrived on location and updated the report to include smoke showing from all sides and fire through the roof. Additional handlines were put into service and both aerials on the box set up to operate on either side of the large corner property.
