Box 25 was dispatched at 22:14 for a reported structure fire in the area of the 1200 blk. of Chestnut Street. Engines 12, 1, 5, 9 safety, Tower 1, Ladder 1, Rescue 1, Medic 602 and Cars 4 and 9 responded. During the response, dispatch reported the correct address was now 1217 Chestnut and that 911 had received about 5 calls reporting the incident.

Car 9 arrived on location in the front of the building and reported heavy smoke from the second floor windows, working fire. Upon further investigation, he then reported fire broke out from the first floor rear with possible extension to the second floor. Car 9 ordered a handline to be extended to the rear to protect an exposure.

Meanwhile, another handline was pulled from Engine 13 and advanced into the building to fight the fire. Firefighters on the line were met with heavy fire on the first floor as they crawled through the lower level. An additional line was pulled and advanced by the crews checking the second floor. Ladder 1 laddered the building and took out the upper windows to allow the interior crews better access to search.

The fire on the first floor was quickly contained and an extensive overhaul was begun. At 22:30, Car 4 reported fire in the walls and ceiling as crews began opening up. No fire was found on the second floor, however the area did sustain moderate heat and smoke damage. Firefighters also needed to clear smoke from the exposures on both sides of the fire building.

At 22:45 Car 4 put the incident under control, some units remained on the scene for an additional hour to assist in an investigation. No reports on what may have sparked the blaze were given. During the incident an additional Medic unit was called to the scene to assist a by-stander having trouble breathing, a reported elderly woman who lived several doors away was transported to the hospital. There were no other reports of injuries from the fire.
