Units were dispatched around 1520 this afternoon to the 1700 block of Centre avenue for a report of an mva with entrapment and rollover and a victim trapped under the vehicle. Engine 11, Ladder 3, Rescue 1, Medic 603 and Car 6 responded. Apparatus arrived on location shortly after and Engine 11 reported a vehicle on it's side and multiple injuries.
Soon after arrival, Medic 603 called for another unit to respond to assist with multiple victims and reported that they were working on a trauma victim, female approximately 60 years of age. A male victim approached Ladder 3's crew and asked for assistance. He stated that he was the driver of the vehicle that rolled over and pulled himself from the wreck. He was reported to have suffered minor injuries. Another female victim was cared for by Medic 601 and later transported.
The trauma victim was reported to be a crossing guard assigned to the corner of Centre Ave and Exeter Street. She had assisted several children walking home from school just prior to being struck by the roll over vehicle, a pickup truck, which police later stated had gone through a red light. The other female victim was the driver of an auto reported to have been hit by the truck before it struck the crossing guard. Witnesses reported that the crossing guard was thrown several feet after being struck.
Firefighters assisted with getting the crossing guard ready for transport and then the crewman of Engine 11 drove the ambulance to the hospital while the patient was worked on by the Medics. The victim received multiple injuries and was reported to be in critical condition later in the evening.
Ladder 3 was released and Rescue 1, after securing their equipment, also left the scene. Police were on location and took over the incident. The intersection was closed for an extended period while police continued their investigation.
