At 17:49, box 73 was struck for a confirmed working fire at 548 Tulpehocken St. Engines 11, 8, 1, 9 for safety, Ladder 1, Tower 1, Rescue 1, M602, Cars 3, 6, 7 and EMS were dispatched on the box. Dispatchers advised personnel responding that they had multiple calls for a working house fire. Firefighters responding reported that smoke from the fire filtered through the streets for blocks away on approach. Engine 11 arrived on the scene within minutes and confirmed a working fire in a 3 story middle of the row.
Firefighters from both Engine 11, and Engine 3 advanced the initial attack line into the fire building Crews reported that the fire had already spread to both exposures on either side of the fire building 2 more additional attack lines were deployed, one to exposure B, and the other to the 2nd floor of the fire building.
The two aerial companies were in the process of ventilating the upper floors and firefighters made their way to the roof. At this time, Command reported that this was an all hands working fire, and struck 2nd alarm at 18:02, bringing in Engines 5, 13, and Ladder 3, M604 for (M603) along with Cars 1, 4, 8, 10, 22 to the scene. As crews arrived from the additional alarms they were detailed to which building needed help. Car-1 arrived and took over command of the fire.
At 18:26, Command ordered a 3rd alarm struck, Engine 14, and Snorkel 1 from reserve were dispatched to the fire scene. The fire was placed under control at 19:17, with crews remaining on the scene for a period of time for extensive overhaul. There was 1 civilian injury, a female who was taken to the hospital, she received burns of unknown degree. There were also 3 minor firefighter injuries.
Two dogs were rescued from separate homes. One of the pets was given O2 using a new animal mask recently acquired by the EMS division. The Red Cross is assisting with 4 adults, and 4 children.
In all, five buildings were damaged. 548 Tulpehocken, the main fire building, had heavy fire on the 1st floor, from the middle of the building to the rear, with extension to the 2nd floor rear, as well as the 3rd floor and roof. 546 Tulpehocken, which was exposure B had heavy fire out the rear of the 1st, & 2nd floors, as well as the 3rd floor and roof area. 544 Tulpehocken, exposure B-1 had heavy fire out the 1st floor rear. 550 Tulpehocken, exposure D had heavy fire on the 1st & 2nd floors out the rear. 550A Tulpehocken, exposure D-1 had smoke damage. The Fire Marshal's office is investigating.
