Fire in Apartment burns out Print E-mail

Shortly after Midnight this morning, Box 13 was struck for a fire at 206 South 3rd Street. Engines 3, 5, 1, 13 Safety Co. Ladder1, Tower1, Rescue1, Medic602 and Cars 2 and 8 responded.

Ladder 1 and Engine 3 arrived to find residents outside the middle of row 3 story with no smoke showing from the exterior.

Some residents of the multi-unit apartment building stated the rear apartment was on fire and that smoke was coming into their apartments. The crew began to investigate but was redirected to go through the bakers alleyway to gain entrance to the rear apartment. They could see smoke pushing out the rear of the building. Engine 3 then stretched an 1 3/4 handline through the alleyway as crews forced entry at the rear steel entrance door.

The small 2 room and bath apartment on the first floor rear was smoke packed but sealed up and the fire actually burned itself out and was just smoldering with the lack of air and very little contents to burn, just a twin chair and small items, and the walls were plastered over brick.

The majority of damaged was to the window nearby and interior woodwork and doors. No one was in the apartment at the time as the quick search revealed by Rescue 1, Ladder 1 and Engine 3. The crews cleared the scene within the hour. The cause of the fire was unknown and will be investigated. There were no reported injuries.
