Box 75 was transmitted at 21:45 this evening for a reported house fire in the rear of 327 W. Windsor St. Apparatus that responded were Engines 11, 3, 9, 1 for safety, Ladder 3, Rescue 2, Medic 601 and Cars 3 and 6. Eng-11 arrived on the scene within a few minutes and reported a pile of trash in the rear of the yard. Firefighters stretched a booster line through the exposure B building and crews overhauled the trash pile, there was minor extension to the structure.
Crews were on the scene for a short period of time. Car 3 remained on the scene waiting for a Police evidence technician to arrive to take photo's of this fire along with 2 smaller fires down at the railroad tracks at River Rd and Clinton St.
Engine 1, while clearing the W. Windsor Street fire, noticed a column of smoke coming from the area of the railroad tracks and investigated. They found 2 separate small fires along the tracks and requested a second engine company to assist. Car 6 responded along with Engine 9, both Engine companies extinguished the fires and cleared a short time later.
Later, while Car 3 was still on the scene at W. Windsor St. doing his paper work, a neighbor from 325 W. Windsor St. came up to him and told him that their house was filling up with smoke again. Chief Moyer went into the residence to confirm this. He walked around the rear and discovered smoke coming out of the basement window of the fire building and could see fire in the basement. He called for an assignment to respond.
Engine 11 and Ladder 3 were sent back to the scene where crews forced entry into the basement and found a small pile of debris burning on the floor. As the crew extinguished the fire, one of the firefighters heard crackling noise above his head and noticed fire between the rafters running the entire length. Two firefighters went up the interior stairs and forced the door to the first floor. They discovered fire extending upward inside a wall in the kitchen and advised command. A first alarm was dispatched which brought back all the apparatus on the first box.
Firefighters opened up the walls in the kitchen and several other rooms on the first floor and extinguished all the visible fire. They overhauled much of the rest of the structure to make sure there was no other fire spread. Some crews remained on the scene for over an hour assisting the Fire Marshal who responded to investigate the multiple fires.
The fire in the basement was apparently smoldering while firefighters were there the first time but crews never had any signs of a fire due to the building being boarded up. There were no reports of injuries.
