Late this afternoon firefighters responded to a report of smoke coming from a residence in the 1400 blk of Wayne St. At 15:28, Box 719 was dispatched sending Engines 11, 3, 9, 1 safety, Snorkel 1, Rescue 1, Medic 602 and Cars 5 and 7 to the scene.

Engine 11 arrived on location and reported smoke coming from the chimney. On further investigation smoke was discovered coming from the outside cellar door and Car 5 reported a working fire. Firefighters advanced a handline down the steps and searched for the fire. They encountered heavy smoke and high heat conditions but only minimal fire. After extinguishing the visible fire they began ventilating the lower level.

Meanwhile, another crew had forced their way into the main level and began opening up to clear the smoke and look for extension. Another 1 3/4 inch line was stretched into the building but was not charged. A search for victims proved negative but firefighters did find evidence of a dog. The animal was later found chained under a tree in the front yard.

The home received heavy smoke and heat damage on the 1st floor and heat and fire damage in the basement. A water pipe in the basement had burst and contributed in keeping the flames from extending further. Car 23 was called to the location to investigate the cause of the fire and a police evidence technician was later called as well. The Red Cross was notified and were assisting the occupants.

There were no hydrants in the block and Engine 3 reverse laid more than 700 feet of supply line to Engine 11 in front of the building. Apparatus cleared the scene in just under two hours.
