Careers in the Reading Fire Department

 

Fire Supression and EMS Careers in the Reading Fire Department are through Civil Service testing only.

 Announcements are published in job searches, trade magazines, local newspapers and here on our website.

Applicants must be 18 years of age. There is currently no age limit for applying.

Personnel are members of the International Association of Firefighters.

Getting hired as a firefighter or paramedic is a multi-step process.

  • Announcements
  • Application - must be certified, fee
  • Testing - written examination
  • Scores - puts you on list for continuing based upon your test score
  • Physical - Your doctor must approve your participation in the Physical Agility Test (CPAT)
  • CPAT -  (Candidate Physical Ability Test Preparation Guide Candidate Physical Ability Test Preparation Guide 672.38 Kb) + only the number of applicants needed +Paramedic candidate currently does not take this test
  • Physical - Performed by Fire Department Physician
  • Certification
  • Announcement of Hiring
  • Entry level lists are good for three years.

    Current Firefighter list is good until 06/13/2008 *new list is being discussed

    Paramedic List is exhausted *new list is being discussed

    Department Wide Tech-Rescue Training

    The department will be beginning NFPA 1006 Training For Technical Rescue. The course starts in November and finishes in March.

    Fire Museum Undergoing Repairs

    The Liberty Station Fire Museum Project moves forward with some repairs to the exterior, and a new heating system.

    Allentown Brother In Need!

    There will be a monetary collection for Allentown Fire Fighter Rick Ensley.  He and his family suffered a total loss of home and possessions due to a fire that occurred on Tuesday, November 11, 2008. photo from Morning Call
