sovcenterEngine 1, Tower 1 and Car 7 were dispatched to a fire alarm at the Sovereign Center, upon arrival crews were met by security at the 7th & Penn Streets entrance reporting a smoke condition in a laundry room on the 8th & Cherry Streets side of the building on the basement level. Just past the Royals locker rooms, crews encountered smoke along the ceiling & a deluge of water coming from a closed room, a heavy smoke condition was encountered inside the room with sprinkler activation. From the report to Car 7, Phantom Box 2418 was transmitted summoning E13, E3, E5, L1, R1, Medic 603, & Car 5 to the 8th & Cherry corner of the square block arena.

After clearing some smoke from the 10x10 laundry room, crews realized the fire was contained by the sprinkler head but water was starting to cause a serious situation. With no sectional valves in the area, the main valve was shut down by crews in the sprinkler room and a sprinkler stop was put in place by E1 to stop the residual water inside the pipes. A large salvage operation commenced with water vacuums, squeegees, and a prosser pump being utilized to minimize damage to nearby banquet & storage areas.
Cars 1, 22, & 23 responded on the Box along with FM10. A pile of mop heads & towels were found burned and it is believed a solvent in the mop heads caused a chemical reaction during the laundering process.

Fire & water damage was minimal and it was business as usual for Sovereign Center employees during the entire event. Sovereign Center management did state they had a new favorite in next years Battle of the Badges game. Crews cleared the scene a little over an hour later. Thanks to Paramedic B. Mack for the photo.
