Shortly before 03:00 this morning, Box 621 was transmitted for a report of a structure fire at 628 Moss Street. Apparatus assigned to the Box were Engines 9, 1, 11, Lad-3, Twr-1, R-1, Medic 603, Eng-13 for Safety and Cars 6 and 9.

Apparatus arrived to find a smoke condition outside and an 1 3/4 handline was stretched into the residence. Crews encountered heavy smoke and heat on the 2nd floor. Two firefighters advancing the line were making progress on the fire in a bathroom in the rear of the 2nd floor when they each sustained separate injuries and were taken off the operation. Backup crews inside the dwelling took over and the fire was extinguished with heavy overhaul. Smoke was cleared from the building and crews remained on the scene for more than an hour overhauling and cleaning up.

Fire officials on the scene determined a cause of the fire was a candle left burning. The area of the fire was extensively damaged although no amount was available.

The two injured firefighters were transported to the hospital from the scene. One was reportedly treated and released. A third firefighter was also taken to the emergency room after apparatus had returned to station. All of the injuries were believed to be minor.

It was reported that the family was asleep when the fire broke out, the family's pet dog was credited with alerting the occupants of the danger. No civilian injuries were reported.
