A regulator failed and caused an underground transformer to burn in a vault below the sidewalk outside a four story commercial building with apartments. Firefighters apply foam to the appliance after the electric in cut.
At 1900 hrs this evening, Box 141 was dispatched for an electrical fire at 124 So 5th St, an old four story commercial building originally used as an auto dealership with garages and apartments above. Dispatched were E-3, 5, 13, 14(safety), Tower 1, Ladder 1, Rescue 1, M-603 and Car 2. Upon arrival, Engine 3 reported smoke showing from the large sidewalk area.
Upon further investigation it was discovered that an underground, 1300 Volt, transformer was involved with fire. Crews began to check the interior of the buildings for occupants and smoke and fire extension on all floors. Defensive hose lines were put into place in front of the building as well as in the sublevel just beyond the Vault to protect the building.
Unit 21 was in command of the sublevel area just outside of the vault. Crews had to wait a few hours till Met-Ed Electric Co. made sure the power was off to the Vault. Afterward, a firefighter crew off E-3 and L-1 extinguished the fire after removing the sidewalk grate and applying Aqueous Foam until the smoke color changed from black to white.
Crews cleared the incident around 2220 hrs, Met-ed remained on scene. Power to several businesses and residents was cut and a temporary line was installed to get the power on. There were no reported injuries.
