Engine 3, Ladder 1 and Car 9 responded to a special assignment on box 1612 to the Madison Building, 412 Washington Street around 19:00 this evening. Fire panel showed an alarm condition on the 6th floor in the annex, a 5 story addition of the building that houses federal courts and other offices. Firefighters attempted to use the elevator in the annex to get to the floor but found the unit not operating. They then attempted to access the addition from the main building by going up to the 5th floor and crossing over after walking up the additional story. After several minutes looking for the access they discovered the entrance to the upper floor by accessing it through a men's bathroom. They discovered a smoke condition in the room that houses the elevator motor for the annex. The motor had burned up and the fire was out. Smoke was cleared and units returned after about 30 minutes. Rescue 1 and Engine 1 were called to assist.
