At 0840 hrs this morning communications dispatched a fire alarm for the Berks County Services Center at 633 Court Street. During the dispatch additional calls were received reporting smoke on the 5th & 6th floors. Car 7 requested the box struck for Phantom Box 1628.
Crews initially made their way through scores of people evacuating the 16 story building. After entry into the lobby, crews found water discharging from sprinkler head inside elevator # 1. Firefighters also found most of the smoke had dissipated on the 5th & 6th floors.
Maintenance personnel reported that an elevator cable had slipped out of the rollers connected to the car, which cause the rollers to become distorted and bend into the shaft-way. The protrusion into the shaft-way caught a sprinkler head which caused the discharge of water. The smoke was caused by the activation of the fire pump.
