"B" platoon companies were stretched thin early Friday morning when 2 fires occurring within minutes of each other caused multiple 911 calls. Shortly after 0200 hrs, Box 232 was tapped for a flames showing from a garage somewhere in the 500 block of south 16 1/2th street. Engines 13 & 1 surrounded the hilly area by approaching from both 16th 1/2  and 17th streets. The fire was eventually pinpointed to be the rear of a house in the 1600 block of Cotton street. Engine companies stretched 2 1/2 line down an alley way to cut the fire off from spreading, although had to keep there distance as flames impinged upon several electrical lines and a transformer. The fire caused an impressive light show. With Car 7 working alone, communications contacted off duty Car 8 for backup duties.

With Car 8 on his way into the city, communications advised they were receiveing multiple calls for a dwelling in the 100 block of Mullberry street. Box 426 was tapped one minute later, bring all remaining city apparatus to 111 Mullberry. Companies found flames from both 2nd story windows of the property with people evacuating. The department is no stranger in the block as 2 other multiple alarm fire occured there in the past 5 years. First arriving Engine 9 stretched in to attack the bulk of the fire on the second floor, while an additional line was stretched to the basement to extinguish a small fire under the stairwell. With the 2 working fires, recall was initiated to bring city apparatus back up to capability.

The garage fire on Cotton street was fully extinguished using detergent foam as it was packed floor to ceiling with garbage. All companies were back in quarters by 0430. The Fire Marshalls office is investigating both fires.
