"D" Platoon Severe Weather Brings Flooding Print E-mail
Written by FF E. Hirner
July 27, 2008

"D" platoon companies were just finishing lunch when a string of sever thunder storms entered the county and city. The storms would trigger a rash of events which would keep firefighters busy. Numerous reports of downed wires and tree began to saturate the communications center. As the rain began to slow, an assignment was sent to the Spring Street subway for a report of a vehicle trapped in water. As Ladder 3 responded from 9th & Marion they encountered over 1' of water flowing down 9th street into the subway area. Crews found a vehicle partially submerged with 3 occupants. Initially FF's attempted to wade into the area, but changed tactics when the water rose to quickly. A small fishing boat was commandeered from a local man, and used to get to the occupants. In the short time it took to reach the victims, the water had risen to the roof line of the car. EMS evaluated all victims none required transport.

During this incident Engine 9 was sent to check 8th & Oley streets for an additional report of a vehicle stranded in a similar situation. It was found to be not a serious as the first.

Companies on scene
