Busy Night Shifts for the D Platoon

8/1/08 20:33 - Dispatched to 8th and Spring with Engine 9 and Medic 601 for a motor vehicle accident.  Engine 9's crew found one vehicle ran into 800 Spring St.  The collision damaged the brick wall and tore off electric service lines to the building's tenants.  Minor fluids were controlled and the driver refused EMS evaluation.

8/1/08 23:43 - Dispatched to 100 W Windsor with Engine 11 and EMS for a 2-vehicle MVA.  Engine 11 reported a minor accident, no fluids, and no extrication.  The Rescue was recalled prior to arrival.

8/2/08 02:10 - Dispatched to 5th and Washington with Engine 3 and Medic 603 for a motorcycle accident.  West Reading Police were pursuing the motorcycle after noticing the motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed.  West Reading Police lost track of the motorcyclist  after following him into the City, only to come upon the wreck at 5th and Washington Streets.  The motorcyclist broadsided the rear passenger side of a minivan traveling west on Washington, suffering serious injuries.  He was not wearing a helmet.  Crews packaged the patient and cleaned up and cleared the scene within 30 minutes.

8/2/08 03:07 - Box 134 was tapped for 520 Minor Street sending Engine 5, Engine 1, Engine 3, Tower 1, Ladder 1, Rescue 1, Engine 13 (Safety), Car 4, and EMS.  Radio gave additional information of a fire bombing and multiple calls.  Engine 5 went on location reporting nothing showing from Minor St.  Engine 5 Crewman located the extinguished fire in the rear of the property.  An incendiary device was thrown against a brick wall causing little damage.  Crews were released and back in station within 15 minutes.

8/2/08 04:19 - Engine 9 was dispatched to a car fire in the area of 10th and Oley.  They located a working car fire to the rear of 722 Mulberry St behind the Olivets Boys Club.  Car 4 special called Engine 1 for assistance due to difficulty accessing the fire.  Rescue 1 was requested normal flow to cover a gasoline leak related to the car fire.  The exterior of the Olivet's Club suffered some smoke damage with a light haze inside the building.

8/2/08 17:54 - Engine 13, Rescue 1, and Medic 603 were sent to 16th and Cotton Streets for a motorcycle accident.  Crews found a motorcyclist who ran into a parked car suffering a injury to his right leg and damage to the bike.   The rider was wearing a full helmet.  Medic 603 and Engine 13 packaged the patient.  Rescue 1 took care of the antifreeze leaking from the motorcycle.

8/2/08 18:40 - Engine 13, Rescue 1, and Medic 603 were to Southeast Reading again for another motor vehicle accident.  Crews found a 2-vehicle MVA at 18th St and Perkiomen Ave.  Rescue 1 went to work on one of the vehicles, removing the driver's door for patient extrication while Medic 603 and Engine 13 tended to the injured.  Two people were transported by EMS and crews cleared in 30 minutes.

8/3/08 01:04 - Engine 3, Rescue 1 and Medic 601 were dispatched to 2nd and Penn Streets for the third motorcycle accident in two days.  The motorcyclist was traveling east on the Penn Street Bridge and failed to negotiate the curve onto southbound 2nd St, striking the traffic island and losing control.  The rider was not wearing a helmet and suffered serious injuries in the accident.

8/3/08 02:19 - Box 74 was tapped for W Greenwich St and Schuylkill Ave sending Engine 11, Engine 3, Engine 1, Snorkel 1 (for Ladder 1), Tower 1, Rescue 1, Engine 13 (Safety), Car 4, and EMS to the area.  Engine 11 went on location and found no signs of fire in the area.  Crews were directed down Ritter St and found a small trash fire next to a garage at the rear of 537 Schuylkill Ave that had been extinguished.  Crews were back in station within 30 minutes.

8/3/08 04:16 - Engine 9 was dispatched to the rear of 1147 Douglas Street for a car fire.  Crews found a fully involved passenger vehicle just off of 12th St.

8/3/08 19:22 - Medic 602, Engine 9, and Car 4 were sent to the 1100 blk of Windsor St for a shooting.  Crews found a male with a single small caliber gun shot wound to the abdomen.

8/4/08 04:10 - Engine 1 and EMS were dispatched to Cedar and Buttonwood Streets for a shooting.  One person was grazed by a bullet after a robbery attempt.

The department will be beginning NFPA 1006 Training For Technical Rescue. The course starts in November and finishes in March.

The Liberty Station Fire Museum Project moves forward with some repairs to the exterior, and a new heating system.

Allentown Brother In Need!

There will be a monetary collection for Allentown Fire Fighter Rick Ensley.  He and his family suffered a total loss of home and possessions due to a fire that occurred on Tuesday, November 11, 2008. photo from Morning Call
