Firefighters salute their fallen brothersNo matter what anyone else does, we will hold this Memorial each year to remember the 343 firefighters who paid the ultimate price on that September day in 2001. Never forget! That is what we said then and it still has meaning to us today. Such echoed the sentiment of one of the firefighters that attended the Memorial to those lost in the attacks of the World trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, DC and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Although we gather to remember all those lost that day, we as firefighters stand to pay tribute to the firefighters from New York City who ran into the buildings and tried to help.

What happened on that fateful day still lives in the hearts of all those here, Firefighter Keith Eschelman told the crowd of more than 50 who gathered in Reading City Park this morning. Brothers we think of every day, when the Brothers and Sisters standing here before you answer calls for the Reading Fire Department.

The names of all 343 Firefighters and Officers were read aloud by Retired Fire Marshal David Janiszewski and a bell was sounded for each of the corresponding events that occurred on the morning of 9/11. Flags representing each of the firefighters were set in the ground at the memorial.
