Reading PA Fire Department

Box 544 was dispatched shortly before 05:00 this morning for a fire in the 2000 block of Kutztown Road after dispatchers received several calls about a porch on fire. Firefighters arrived on location and found furnishings burning on the front porch of 2026 Kutztown Road.

An 1 3/4 handline was used to extinguish the fire on the porch but not before it had heavily damaged the front of the dwelling. Heavy smoke also filtered into the residence and crews needed to overhaul the inside living area as well as the porch.

Other fires were found burning at two more locations up the street. One of those was in Muhlenburg Township. Engine 11 attacked those fires and Company 10 was also called. Another fire in a planter was found to have burned itself out.

Upon arrival at the location in the 2000 block, 2 persons were reported to be seen walking away from the scene, police were reported to have later been questioning someone however it was not clear if those were the same two seen leaving the area.

The Red Cross was called to attend to 8 residents of the home which was left inhabitable. There were no reports of injuries. The incident is being investigated by the Fire Marshal and Police.
