0543 hrs, A fire alarm was dispatched for the Book Bindery Apartment complex at 150 North 4th Street. During the response 1st Deputy Chief Squibb was advised by communications that other calls were being recieved for smoke on 2 floors.  The building was converted into loft style apartments with high ceilings. The box was struck immediately bring 1st alarm companies to the scene. Firefighter from Engine 3 & Ladder 1, began evacuation residents from the 5th and 6th floors, as smoke began to bank down to the floor. 

The tower and rescue arrived on the south east side of the building, and found smoke from the top of the building around the elevator shaft. The tower was backed into a small parking lot off of 4th street and placed into position over the shaftway. While the residents were being evacuated Engine 13 & 5 began assembling for a standpipe stretch from within the stairwell. Crews from Engine 13 located the fire within the elevator lobby of the building. A fire was found inside the elevator car, which caused heat and smoke damage to the upper floors of the building. 

Over 35 units worth of tenants of the building were relocated across the street into the Police Athletic League Building. The fire was placed under control shortly after the discovery of the elevator car. All units were clear aound 0815 hrs.
