Box 234 was dispatched around 15:15 this afternoon for a reported fire in the 300 Blk of So. 17th 1/2 Street. Engines 13, 5, 1 and 3 safety, Tower 1, Rescue 1, Medic 601 and Cars 3, 6 and 22 responded. Car 3 arrived in the block and reported seeing heavy fire blowing out the rear of a structure at 305B. A hand line was pulled and the fire was attacked directly. Second handline was advanced into the exposure where heavy fire was discovered. Minutes later a 2nd alarm was called for bringing Engines 9, 14 and Ladder 1 to the scene. Car 1 and FM 10 had also responded. The flames and smoke extended to two other dwellings and firefighters fought for several more minutes to get the fire under control. Within a half an hour crews had much of the fire blackened down and began extensive overhaul on most of the structures. Units began clearing the scene just before 17:00 hrs.
The fire is believed to have started in the kitchen, a female occupant of 305B reported cooking with oil when flames erupted. She was located outside early in the incident and was checked by EMS but did not require treatment. A neighbor reported hearing a small explosion and saw the fire blow out of the residence. 305, 305A and 307 were all reported to have damage of varying degree. The Fire Marshal investigated.
