Box 25 was dispatched just before 08:45 this morning for a reported structure fire at 108 So. 12th Street, Engines 13, 1, 5, 3 safety, Tower 1, Ladder 1, Rescue 1, Medic 601 and Cars 1 and 6 responded. Dispatch reported that the occupant stated "she had a candle burning and fell asleep, when she awoke there was fire everywhere". Car 6 arrived on location and reported heavy smoke coming from the basement windows, working fire.

A handline from Engine 13 was advanced into a basement apartment. Firefighters from several other apparatus checked the upper floors of the multi-unit for occupants and extension. At 08:52, Car 6 reported the bulk of the fire knocked down and crews were overhauling. Car 1 put the fire under control at 09:00.

Fire involved two rooms of the apartment. A burned mattress was overhauled outside. Heavy smoke was cleared from the rest of the building. A female victim was reportedly treated by EMS for minor burns but refused further treatment. Car 10 responded and is investigating. Thanks to all those who provided information for this story.

Dispatcher's report of the possibility of a candle being involved in this incident calls to remind us of the safe use of candles, see Candle Safety.
