The resident of a first floor apartment at the Washington Towers, 50 No. 4th Street, was in the bathroom of his unit when he heard crackling coming from the kitchen. He went to investigate and found flames coming from a pot on the stovetop that was filled with a wax potpourri product. He threw water on the flames and removed the pot from the burner but not before the fire had burned up the wall and melted several items stored next to the range. The man had mistakenly turned the burner on high and the product flashed.

Responding to the resulting AFA, the crewmen from Engine 3 and Ladder 1 found a heavy smoke condition in the hallway of the 1st floor. The man was sitting on a chair in the unit complaining of burns to his hands and face. The crew turned off the electric to the stove and reported their findings to Car 6, a Medic unit was also called for. The patient was checked by EMS but refused transport. The Fire Marshal and Car 3 also responded. Units cleared the incident within 30 minutes.
