Box 132 was dispatched at 2033 this evening for a reported mattress fire at 116 North 3rd Street, one block from the 3rd and court fire station. As the doors to the apparatus bays were going up at the firehouse, people were already gathered outside yelling about the fire up the street. The block was filled with smoke as the units arrived on location. Engine 3 reported a working fire and that fire was visible from the front of the structure.
The crewman from Engine 3 pulled a 1 3/4 inch handline and firefighters advanced it into the building. Ladder 1 laddered the front with the main to the roof and an extension ladder was raised to the 2nd floor. Tower 1 took the rear of the building and reported fire through the roof of an addition, there was also a report of an occupant still on the second floor. Car 2 ordered a second alarm transmitted and then advised for the first due engine from the second to go to the rear to supply the Tower. Car 8 reported from the rear of the buildings that they had contents of a propane cylinder burning and feeding the fire.
Although 114 and 116 No 3rd had separate exterior doors, there are common interior doorways. The fire started in an apartment at 114 and spread quickly to 116 through the doorway and up an interior stairwell. Firefighters used several lines to attack the fires, command reported visible fire knocked down about 45 minutes after the first alarm. Crews preformed major overhaul to the structures and then assisted the Fire Marshal. All units had cleared the scene by 23:45hrs.
It was reported that the cause of the fire was the result of careless smoking by a resident of 114 No. 3rd. There were no reported injuries during the incident. The Red Cross responded to assist a number of occupants that were displaced by the fire. Apparatus that responded on the first alarm were Engines 3, 1, 13, 5 safety, Ladder 1, Tower 1, Rescue 1, medic 601 and Cars 2 and 8. Responding on the 2nd alarm were Engines 11, 14, Ladder 3, Medic 603 and Cars 4 and 9. Cars 1, 22, 23 and 600 also responded. the Fire Marshal is continuing the investigation.
