Firefighter Transported after Ceiling Collapse Print E-mail

Box 34 was dropped at 0411 for a reported structure fire in the 300 block of Elm Street, summoning Engines 3, 1, 5, 13 safety, Ladder 1, Tower 1, Rescue 1, Medic 602 and Cars 5 and 7to the scene. Engine 3, Ladder 1 and Car 5 opened their bay doors to a heavy smoke condition as the light wind was blowing the smoke from 3 blocks away towards their station. On approach dispatch reported possible address of 306 Elm Street and they had fire showing from the 18th Floor. Ladder 1 arriving within minutes reported heavy fire from the 3rd floor rear of a 3 story stand alone occupied residence.

1st and 2nd floor occupants were making their way out of the building as crews from the Rescue quickly made access to the 2nd floor from inside and the fire escape. The door to the 3rd floor had to be forced, as it was forced a litter of cats emerged from the steps inside as fire rolled above the stairwell. The building was laddered while 2-1 3/4 lines were stretched from Engine 3, a 3rd line was stretched by Medic 602 up the fire escape for fire on the exterior and roof area. Engine 3 quickly knocked down the fire on the inside and the fire was placed under control with overhaul within a half hour of the alarm. During the fire attack, numerous sections of the 3rd floor ceiling came down on the crews sending the 2nd Deputy Chief to the hospital. Medic 601 was called to the scene to transport Car 7 to RHMC, his condition & injuries are unknown. 3 rooms and the rear roof of the 3rd floor were heavily damaged, with the rest of the building sustaining water damage.

FM10 was on the scene to investigate the fire, which is undetermined at this time. The Red Cross was called to assist four occupants of the 1st and 2nd floors. All apparatus cleared the scene a little after 6am.
