Heater creates heavy smoke condition Print E-mail

eckert_aveCompanies were alerted, just prior to lunch, for smoke in a dwelling in the 1700 block of?Eckert Ave. Engine companies 13, 1, 3, 8 (9) safety. Tower 1, Rescue 1, Medic 601 and Car 7 were dispatched?to Box 237at?1132 hours. Engine 13 arrived with a smoke condition throughout a very large dwelling built on the side of Mt Penn.

Through investigation in the basement of the property, the furnace was found to have heated so extensively it had burned through most of the exterior insulation and some adjacent pipe insulation. Crew attempted to control the fire with dry chemical extinguishers, switching to a small hand-line when the extinguishers proved unsuccessful. Crews had to utilize several ventilation fans to remove the smoke from the?dwelling. Companies were on scene for approximately 1 hour. There were no injuries and no estimate of damages were given.? Our Condolences

Our Condolences to the family of Retired Firefighter Donald L. Daniels who passed away on Friday, October 10, 2008. Firefighter Daniels last worked on Engine 14 on the D Platoon after a long assignment on Ladder 1. He retired in May of 1995. Donald was also active in many committees of the Reading Firefighters Local 1803 and was instrumental in negotiations of many of the benefits that firefighters still enjoy today.

Our Condolences

Our condolences go out to the family of Retired Firefighter Robert J. Luckenbill, Sr. who passed away on October 5, 2008. "Snorkel Bob" last worked the B Platoon on Snorkel 1, retiring in February of 1992.

Funeral arrangements for Police Officer Anthony Miccicke, Sr. are announced and the Fire Department will help honor the life of the Police Officer.
