Kitchen fire in High Rise Apartment Building |

Engine 1, Tower 1 and Car 8 responded to an AFA at the Eisenhower Apartments, 835 franklin Street, this afternoon around 14:15. Units arrived on location and the crews entered the building and checked the alarm panel. There was initially one alarm for an apartment on the 12th floor and then a second came in for the 12th floor corridor. Firefighters went up to the 12th floor to check for the cause of the alarm and encountered a smoke condition in the hallway and heavy smoke coming from apartment 1211. The crewman from Engine 1 radioed the report and box 1611 was struck. Additional apparatus responding on the box included Engines 13, 3, 5, Ladder 1, Snorkel 1, Rescue 1, Medics 601 and 602 and Car 2. Apparatus staged in their preplanned positions and began collecting the equipment to take with them into the building.
Meanwhile, on the 12th floor, the initial crew that responded encountered the occupant of the apartment who was injured. The door to the unit was already opened and they could see small fires burning in the kitchen and elsewhere in the apartment. An extinguisher from the floor was used to quickly knock down the flames. Numerous fans were set up to clear the floor of smoke once the fires were extinguished. Within 15 minutes of the dispatch Car 2 put the fire under control.
Reports stated that a female occupant of the apartment was boiling water on the stove which was left to boil too long and evaporated causing the pot to overheat. Somehow various contents of the kitchen caught fire and the woman became injured during the mishap. Reports stated a victim was transported from the incident to Reading Hospital however fire officials stated she was not taken by any fire department EMS units. The fire is under investigation. Most of the companies had cleared the scene by 15:00. thanks to everyone that contributed to this story.
