At 14:40, Engine 3, Ladder 1, Rescue 1, Medic 601 and Car 6 were dispatched to check on a natural gas condition in the 000 So. 2nd Street. Units arrived on location at the same time as UGI, the gas company. UGI called the fire department after a representative responding to a service call reported a heavy concentration coming from several areas on the east side of the street. Firefighters used meters to attempt to pinpoint the location of the odor and assisted the gas company in gaining access to check inside several homes that were recently vacated after being flooded when the nearby Schuylkill River spilled over it's banks after heavy rains in June of 2006. UGI officials did find one area where a very high concentration of the gas was present and began digging to access the service line.

The fire department remained on the scene until all the homes were checked and returned just over an hour after the dispatch. The original resident that called the gas company began to notice the odor around the same time as an earthquake centered in the Sinking Spring area of the county was felt but officials could not determine if that was the cause of the leak.
