Fire Officers are Literacy Champions

First Deputy Chiefs and other fire officers in the department have been invited to participate in a guest reader program for city school children. Three of the chiefs, the fire prevention lieutenant and the lieutenant training officer have all taken a turn in rotation with city police officers and UGI employees to go to a school and read to the children of one classroom.

On Tuesday, Chief Michael Moyer read "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" to a class of second graders at 16th and Haak Elementary School in East Reading. All the children got a copy of the book to read along.

The program is sponsored by the Reading is Fundamental Literacy Organization. Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. prepares and motivates children to read by delivering free books and literacy resources to those children and families who need them most. The organization was founded in 1966.

Several firefighters have also expressed their desire to get into the program. Thank you Chief Moyer for sharing this with us.
