Reading Police Officer Scott A. Wertz was shot and killed during the performance of his duties in the early morning hours of Sunday August 6, 2006. Officer Wertz was a nine year veteran of the Reading Police force. He leaves behind a wife, two children and many friends.
Wertz was an avid softball player and many of the members of the fire department knew him in that capacity. In April of 2006, he participated in the Battle of the Badges softball game between the police and firefighters to benefit the Michael Wise Foundation. Before the game Wertz caught the first pitch thrown by Wise's widow. We wish to express to the family and friends of Officer Wertz and to all the members of the Reading Police Department our heartfelt expression of sorrow.
A good friend, a good cop and an excellent father and husband. Gave 100% in everything you did, even on the softball field. Was proud to know you for the last 30 yrs, and to work by your side. You will sadly be missed. Rest in Piece Brother, Donny Marks
Imagine the pride
The pride of feeling more than 2000 people clap for a local hero. The first glimpse of the crowds lining Washington Street as we crossed the bridge at the YMCA. Firefighters and State Police at attention along the route. Reading citizens of every class and ethnicity holding signs of appreciation and all of those american flags. Thank you all.
