The Reading Phillies recognized four local heroes during Bank of America Night at the Reading Phillies on Wednesday August 30, 2006. Our own, Firefighter Keith 'Sarge' Eschelman was honored at a previous game individually by throwing out a first pitch during opening ceremonies, Wednesday night, all four of the 2006 honorees were present before the game. These individuals were part of the select group of 272 "Neighborhood Champions" who were honored this season at 68 Minor League Baseball stadiums across the country during each team's Bank of America Day celebration.
Hundreds of nominations were submitted in four professional categories - teachers, police officers, firefighters and healthcare workers. The honorees, each of whom are recognized in front of family, friends and Reading Phillies fans receive a commemorative plaque to celebrate their achievement. Eschleman says he isn't quite sure how he got nominated for the recognition but he is very proud to have received it.
According to documentation supplied by the Bank of America, "Teachers, police officers, firefighters and healthcare professionals make a difference in our community everyday when they go above and beyond their call of duty. Bank of America's Neighborhood Champions program offers a way for community members to say thank you to their local heroes."
