Annual E.D.I.T.H. Drill

by FF A. Kutz

The yearly E.D.I.T.H. Drill was held in accordance with Fire Prevention Week at the Rhoads Apartments 815 Franklin Street. Residents and Firefighters take part in the exercise for educational purposes and are advised in advance of the drill. It is held in a different city high-rise building each year.

Phantom Box 1616 was dispatched at 1900 bringing E13-E3-E5-E9-T1-L1-R1-M604 and M603-Cars 5 and 7 with a report of a fire in Apt 210 and Central Station notification. Cars 1-22-23 and FM10 ran and observed the drill. The Rhoads is part of twin 15 story high-rise buildings.

Many residents evacuated into the lobby area as crews arrived, smoke generators were used for effect and L1 reported smoke showing from the 2nd floor rear. Crews implemented the RFD High-Rise and ICS SOPs and went to work with stretching dry lines inside and out. The building was laddered in the rear. Simulated smoke filled the rooms and hallway on the 2nd floor, the hallways on the 3rd and 15th floors, and the two stair towers. Rooms were searched on the 2nd floor and a dummy victim was rescued from a bathtub early in the exercise.

Most residents were held in place in their apartments. During the drill, 1 occupant was treated for anxiety in the lobby. Crews wrapped up and mechanically ventilated the building and the drill was completed within an hour.

Companies and Officers held a critique afterwards at the Plum and Franklin Station. Information was shared and problems encountered ranging from manpower to communications were addressed and a report will be submitted to the Fire Office for evaluation.
