Fire Prevention and Safety

Welcome to our Fire Prevention and Safety Section

If You Are Having An Emergency NOW, Call 911

Our goal is to provide the public with information about preventing fires, home fire safety and what to do if a fire or other emergency does occur in your home. It is important that you are prepared for an emergency so you can react calmly and quickly when an unforeseen event arises.

We have compiled Fire Safety instructions from some of the leading experts on these topics, including, the National Fire Protection Administration, U. S. Fire Administration, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, CDC and various other fire related organizations and fire safety interests. These pages also contain original material gathered through our website and the Fire Prevention Division of the Reading Fire Department.

Fire Prevention Week October 7-13, 2007.

time for the Great American Fire Drill!Fire can spread rapidly through your home, leaving you as little as two minutes to escape safely once the alarm sounds. Your ability to get out depends on advance warning from smoke alarms, and advance planning - a home fire escape plan that everyone in your family is familiar with and has practiced.

It's time for the Great American Fire Drill!

Sound the alarm! During Fire Prevention Week , NFPA is asking kids and families all across North America to practice their home fire escape plans.

Smoke Detectors Save Lives

A simple statement that still needs to be repeated. Sadly, many victims of residential fires still perish each year in homes where there was no operating Smoke Alarm.

Three basic rules for Smoke Detectors

  1. Purchase and install at least one for your home, preferably one for each floor.

  2. Change the Battery at least once a year

  3. Test the Alarm regularly
