Box 28 was dispatched at 22:51 tonight for a reported structure fire at 428 Spring Garden Street. Engines 8 (for 1), 13, 5 and 3 safety, Tower 1, Ladder 1, Rescue 1, Medic 602 and Cars 3 and 6 responded. Car 6 arrived on location and after investigating reported a heavy smoke condition on the 2nd floor. An attack line was pulled off Engine 8 and advanced up the interior stairs.
The 400 block of Spring Garden is a narrow one way street in the City's SouthEast area. There is a cross street just into the block and then a tight bend that makes it hard for apparatus to navigate through. Most of the apparatus had to park outside the block and the crews walked to the fire building. For the same reason, a ladder was used off the engine to ladder the side of the building and take windows out.
Meanwhile, inside the building, a crew moved in on the fire which involved a second floor bedroom. The fire was quickly extinguished and smoke was vented. Firefighters overhauled the room and the rest of the upstairs.
The fire was investigated, it was quickly determined that the cause was a home made extension cord which came in contact with clothes on the floor of the room. Five persons living in the residence escaped the fire unharmed, the Red Cross was called to assist. One firefighter was taken to the hospital from the scene.
