Box 353 was struck at 15:05 this afternoon for a reported house fire at 223 Hudson St. Apparatus responding were Engines 11, 3, 1, Ladder 1, Tower 1, Rescue 1, Engine 13 for Safety, Medic 602 and Car 7. Ladder 1 gave their response and then reported heavy smoke showing from the firehouse at 3rd and Court which is about 6 blocks away. Engine 11 arrived on the scene in front of the building at 15:07 and reported smoke showing. Ladder 1 arrived soon after and reported heavy fire out the rear of the structure with power lines involved.

Engine 3 used their deck gun in the rear of the buildings to knock down the visible fire. Firefighters placed a 2 and 1/2 inch hoseline in service in the rear and a step gun in the front of the fire building for an exterior fire attack. Several handlines were also placed into service.

Car 7 arrived on location and reported three 2 and 1/2 story buildings well involved in the rear. The fire building was 223 Hudson, with extension to 221 and 225. He ordered a 2nd alarm and a backup chief to respond. The 2nd alarm brought in Engines 5, 9, Ladder 3, Medic 601 and Car 22. All crews were told to report to the front of the fire buildings with scbas and hand tools.

Firefighters battled the fire in the fully involved structures for more than an hour before finally blackening down the flames. The incident was placed under control at 16:23 with extensive overhaul to the roof areas. The roofs cut open and the dormers on the three homes were basically removed to assure the fires were out.

One of the dwellings was occupied and several animals were rescued during the fire. the fire building suffered extensive damage and part of the front wall began to give way. Firefighters used the master stream in an attempt to hydraulically demolish collapsing wall. An order to have the building torn down as soon as possible was issued.

The resident of the occupied escaped unharmed. The occupant lives in the home with his wife and children who were away for the weekend. He and firefighters had rescued several family pets before the flames enveloped the dwelling.

Fire Officials reported the cause of the blaze to be children playing with a lighter. The fire building was littered with trash and the youths, all under the age of 10, allegedly lit paper inside the rear door. Several firefighters were treated on the scene for minor injuries and heat related illnesses. Last remaining units cleared the fire scene at 18:17. Thanks to FF T. Leszczynski for sending us the photos.
