At 12:03hrs this afternoon, Box 428 was struck for a working fire, with possible entrapment, at 218 No. 9th St, a middle of the row 3 story residential property. Apparatus assigned to the box were Engines 1, 13, 3, 9 Safety, Tower 1, Snorkel 1, Rescue 1, Medic 601 and Cars 2 and 8. Car 8 arrived on the scene and reported heavy smoke showing 3rd floor with exposure.
First due Engine 1 was returning from a medical run and was still some distance away, Engine 13 arrived on location and assumed first due on the 9th Street side of the building. Some apparatus entering the scene were hampered by vehicles parked at the intersection.
Crews advanced an 1 3/4 inch handline through the front door and found heavy fire on the second floor. An Engine staging in the rear alley reported fire blowing out the rear of the structure.
Aerial companies went into ladder operations and followed with venting the structure. Rescue 1 and crews inside were busy searching and found that the structure was evacuated and preceded with controlling the fire. The fire had spread quickly through the 2nd floor rear and ceiling to the roof area and began running the 2nd floor roof.
A 2nd alarm was struck at 12:30 for additional manpower, Engines 5, 11, Ladder 1 and Medic 602 responded. The fire was blackened down and after extensive roof ceiling overhaul the incident was put under control without any severe fire damage to the adjoining structures.
There were no known injuries and no information on occupants was readily available. The Fire Marshal is investigating. Crews cleared the scene about 1430 hrs.
