At 03:12, Engine 14 reported being notified by the resident of a structure on fire at 132 Carroll Street. A frantic 79 year old male ran to the fire station three blocks away from the residence to alert someone about the fire and that his elderly wife was still inside. Reports stated that the man tried calling from inside the home but the line was not in service.
The crew from the fire house responded to the scene after reporting the incident to dispatch. They arrived on the location and reported heavy smoke from the first and second floors of a two story semidetached residence. They also reported confirmed entrapment of a resident.
Crews advanced a line into the building, Unit 21 reported fire in the kitchen on the first floor rear. Firefighters on the second floor found the victim in the front bedroom. She was hoisted out the window onto the front porch roof and then brought down a ground ladder. Paramedics were waiting and loaded the patient onto the liter. They worked on the patient briefly in the back of the unit and then transported. The victim was listed in critical condition.
Firefighters extinguished the fire and cleared the dwelling of smoke. Fire extensively damaged the rear of the residence and an aggressive overhaul was needed to completely extinguish the fire. During the initial investigation, a ventilation fan sparked a rekindle which crews handled within minutes.
The incident was put under control two hours after the initial alarm. The fire reportedly began in the rear of the home on the first floor, and spread to the 2nd floor and roof areas of the building. It was not yet reported if any cause was discovered. The male victim was also taken to the hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.
The Fire Marshal and the State Police Fire Marshal are handling the investigation. Apparatus on the Box were; Eng's 14, 5, 3, Lad-1, R-1, Sn-1, E-1 for Safety, M603 and C-7. Cars 1, 2 and 8 also responded.
