During the height of the arson activity this past weekend, it was hard to imagine that an accident could occur igniting a dwelling in the 100 block of West Elm Street. When box 78 was transmitted at 0253 this morning, firefighters looked for another arson job but instead found an occupied 2 1/2 story EOR with light smoke showing under the roof eaves. Ladder 1 had difficulty making the block due to the illegally parked cars, which left Engine 3 by themselves for a short period of time.
Firefighters entered the property with a PW expecting a small fire, when they met the occupant who stated they had a mattress on fire, a line was then stretched from the engine. The fire was quickly extinguished and companies wrapped up within a few minutes.
Firefighter Tim Swartz was injured during the fire and was taken by ambulance to the Reading Hospital. The fire was placed under control at 0313. Engines 3, 11, 1, 5, Ladder 1, Tower, Rescue, M604 & Car 8 responded to the incident.
