A home heating oil delivery truck overturned in the 400 block of Lancaster Avenue early this afternoon. Engines 14, 5 and Rescue one were on the initial call along with a medic unit and Car 6. Engine 14 arrived and reported a tank truck overturned and oil spilling out. They reported the oil was into the catch basin and was spilling at a high rate.

Car 6 called for the Haz Mat truck to be dispatched and told dispatch to notify the respective agencies including the Berks EMA.

Car 22 responded to the river to check the end of the catch basin and confirmed that oil had made it's way into the river. The SCUBA team was organized and the team's LARC vehicle was put into the river to spread a boom to contain the oil.

Traffic in the area was detoured and units were on the scene for several hours. According to reports, the driver of the truck swerved to avoid an accident just before the rig overturned. The driver was transported to Reading Hospital.

Thanks to FF J. Batz for sending us the photos.
