Box 87 was dispatched at 15:31 for a reported structure fire at 309 West Oley St. Engines 8(11), 3, 1 and 9 safety, Ladder 1, Tower 1, Rescue 1, Medic 602 and Cars 3, 6, 22 and 23 responded. Arriving units found smoke pushing from the roof area above the third floor, Car 6 called a working fire. An 1 3/4 handline was advanced into the building and up to a third floor bedroom in the front of the building. The stick of Ladder 1 was raised to the exposure and another handline was advanced up the ladder.

Firefighters opened up the interior walls of the fire building to attack the fire which had begun to spread across the front facade into the exposure. An additional crew was sent into 311 to attack the fire from the exposure and check for additional fire spread. Meanwhile, a crew on the roof used a saw and hand tools to open up a large section of the roof and the upper portion of the front wall.

The fire was knocked down within 20 minutes but crews needed another 30 minutes to open up the rest of the areas affected to assure the fire was extinguished. Car 23, Lt. Born from the Fire Prevention Division, responded early in the incident and investigated. That investigation continued after firefighters left the scene, around 16:00, and a cause was not immediately determined. The fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature. Thanks to FF T. Leszczynski for sending us these photos.
