A tractor trailer crashed into the median on the outer loop of the West Shore By-Pass beyond the Lancaster Avenue exit early this afternoon, Engines 5 and 1, Rescue 1, Medic 601 and Car 3 responded. Arriving units found the roadway wet with diesel fuel which had come from the rigs saddle tanks, each 50 gallons and filled. The female driver was backboarded and transported to Reading Hospital, her condition was not believed to be serious. Firefighters acquired papers from the cab of the vehicle to determine the cargo of the trailer. It was discovered the semi was hauling non hazardous material and crews concentrated on the fuel spill.

Absorbent material was used to contain the liquid and DOT was called to the scene to oversee the cleanup. A company hired by the hauler was dispatched to cleanup the fuel. DEP was also called to the scene. Most units returned within an hour of the dispatch however the scene was not cleared for several hours, causing a major traffic snarled through rush hour. Thanks for Lt. R. Wentzel for sending us these pictures.
