Firefighters responded early this morning to a box alarm dispatched for a reported structure fire at 421 Chestnut Street. Units responding were advised that residents reported heavy smoke throughout the structure. Engine 3 arrived on location and confirmed heavy smoke coming from the building and occupants evacuating.
Crews moving in reported a possible oil burner due to the odor of the smoke, however could not find an entrance to the basement. Another crew entered from the rear and found a door leading down stairs. The heating system was shut down but flames still raged inside the fire box. Several extinguishers needed to be used to finally put the fire out. All of the residents from the apartment building were evacuated, fans were used to clear the smoke from the 3 story building. Firefighters were on the scene for just over one hour. Responding on box 141 were Engines 3, 5, 1, and 13 safety, Ladder 1, Tower 1, Rescue 1, Medic 601 and Cars 3 and 6.
