Giving Back to the Community

Great American CleanupMembers are urged to participate in the upcoming 15th Annual Great American Cleanup on Saturday, April 19, 2008. All members and their families are invited to help out. The day of clean-up will take approximately 4-5 hours, refreshments will be provided.

This is our opportunity to give back to the communities and the citizens we serve so please consider helping out on the 19th.

All interested members should contact Firefighter Jim Wenrich at the Rainbow Station on the A-Platoon (610-655-6183) or 610-507-1894 for more information and event signup. You can also get more information on the clean-up from the communication posted on all bulletin boards.

The Michael H. Wise II Memorial Foundation is once again accepting applications to be considered for two $1000.00 scholarships available to children of Reading Firefighters. Applications were delivered to all stations and must be returned to the Fire Chief's office by March 31, 2008.

Reading Firefighters Local 1803 is planning the 1st Annual 4/11 Perry Apostolou Memorial Golf Outing. This year, 4/11 falls in conjunction with Opening Night at the Reading Phillies. Firefighters do it again

On Sunday, February 17, 2008, the Reading Firefighters and Police took to the ice at the Third Annual Battle of the Badges Hockey game at the Sovereign Center in Reading, PA.

For the 2nd year in a row the Firefighters were victorious playing to a 3 to 2 win over the Police. The game benefited the Battle of the Badges Scholarship Fund.

2007 Run Statistics

Fire Department statistics for 2007 show a drop in the fire loss and civilian injuries after a two year high. One civilian died from injuries after being rescued from a house fire. See 2007 Fire Statistics.

Reading Fire Hockey

Harrisburg and Reading Fire Hockey TeamsThe team played against Harrisburg Fire on Friday January 11, 2007. Harrisburg won the match up 9 - 6 but the team is in good spirits despite the loss. A large group of members came out to cheer the guys on. After the game, Reading members hosted their guests at the Pike Cafe. View some photos from the game.

Promotion

On Monday January 7, 2008, Fire Administration announced the promotion of Firefighter Michael Lessar to the position of Lieutenant-Fire Prevention Officer effective Monday, February 4, 2008. Lieutenant Lessar's radio designation will be Car 24, his duties in part will consist of instructing citizens on fire prevention. He will also assist the fire marshal with inspections of businesses and multi-occupancies.

Carbon Monoxide Incidents

Problems with heating systems during the winter months is one of the greatest concerns for firefighters who respond to numerous heating related calls when the temperature drops to extremes and cause the heaters to work overtime. Along with heater related fire incidents, carbon monoxide calls are also a cause for concern. Bachelor Auction

An unattached male member is being sought to represent the fire department for a special assignment to benefit the Reading Police K-9 Unit.

The Friends of the Reading Police K-9 Unit and The Riveredge will present a Benefit Bachelor Auction on Saturday February 23, 2008 at 6pm, where 20 Worthy and Distinctive Bachelors of Berks County will present themselves for a Silent Auction and an additional 10 will be recruited from the audience and auctioned LIVE!

We would like to see the Fire Department represented.

The event features Dinner for two or tickets to an event for the winning bidder and the Bachelor. Any member fitting the requirements can download and submit an entry form (MS Word doc) and then contact us at Readingpafire.com for sponsorship (MS Word doc).
