Companies dispatched to a motor vehicle accident reported into a building. Additional information supplied while en-route indicated occupants still in the vehicle with PD reporting the vehicle to be on fire. Medic 3 and Rescue 1 arrived with an SUV on the sidewalk with heavy smoke from the vehicle and the porches of two homes on S. 10th St. demolished. One occupant of the vehicle was lying on the sidewalk and the driver was entrapped. Fire had erupted in the passenger compartment and was quickly overtaking the driver. Lt. Tom Rehr called for Engine 5 to immediately stretch a hose-line on arrival. A hose-line and a pressurized water extinguisher were used to knock-down the fire extending from the dashboard. Fire department personnel then rapidly extricated the driver and completed extinguishment of the fire. Both occupants were transported to RHMC. Rescue 1 used a 12' 4x4 to shore-up the porch roof of one home. Building inspection and UGI personnel were also on scene to assess structural and gas utility issues with the homes. Units operated on scene for just under 2 hours.
