11:07 Hours/ 1240 Chestnut Street/ Box 602/ C Platoon- Companies were dispatched to the 1200 block of Chestnut Street for a caller reporting she was on fire and was screaming "get me out". Dispatched advised responding units they were getting multiple calls confirming fire at 1240 Chestnut Street. Tower 1 arrived on scene in just under 3 minutes from dispatch and reported heavy fire throughout the first floor and declared a working fire. Tower 1 stated they could see an individual on the first floor but needed to knock down a wall of fire to try and get to them. A male outside told crews he lived at the residence and said his wife was on the first floor and his child was trapped on the second floor. Crews stretched a line and immediately started flowing water through the front door attempting to knock the fire down where they had seen an individual. E3 crewman and Tower 1 platform rapidly advanced the hose line in through the front door trying to push back the fire that was all around them. They found an individual at the bottom of the stairs and relayed the information to command, but after doing a rapid assessment determined the victim was deceased and not viable. Command notified dispatch of a 2.5 story end of row with heavy fire throughout the first floor extending to the floor above, and requested a 2nd Alarm. Crews continued pushing in, knocking down the fire on and surrounding the stairway in order to get up on the second floor. Crews made the second floor where they found the floor compromised and had heavy fire in the rear. Crews continued in and after a thorough search of the front room where a reported victim was, the search turned out negative. Searches continued on all floors and a second deceased victim was found in the front room on the first floor. A partial collapse was reported on the second floor as well as compromised floors on the 3rd floor.The fire was placed under control with extensive overhaul at 00:05 hours. A total of 4 lines were stretched and in operation and crews were able to contain the fire to the original fire building. The Office of the Fire Marshal is investigating the fire along with the Reading Police Department. One civilian was transported to the hospital for evaluation.
